| The magnificent nave of Winchester, like the Gloucester choir, is a recasing of Norman work, but here the Norman masonry is completely disguised. It has been recut instead of screened and in some places it has been recased to conform to the new style. The result is splendidly three dimensional in contrast to the brittle and planar Gloucester. An important similarity between the cathedrals is the light and balloonlike affect of their vaults, forming a weightless space-encloser.Also, the walls are equally unified by linear patterning across the surfaces. Finally Winchester's east window is clearly based on the great east window at Gloucester. |
