Winchester Cathedral 3

The chapel develops during the late Middle Ages. Built within the body of the church, it is a small chapel containing the tomb of its builder and an altar for prayers on his behalf. Significantly the chantry chapel represent the introduction of private forms of piety into the place of public worship. This bishop's chapel at Winchester fills the space between two piers of the nave arcade. In a rich Perpendicular style, fragile tracery screens stretch across the opening in the plane of nave wall, also lightly enclosing the chantry space within.

La cappella si sviluppò durante il tardo Medio Evo. Costruita dentro la navata centrale della chiesa, è una piccola cappella contenente la tomba del suo costruttore e un altare per chi prega per lui. Significativamente le cappelle commemorative rappresentano l'introduzione di forme private di pietà dentro un luogo pubblico di adorazione. Questa cappella per un vescovo di Winchester riempie lo spazio dietro a due contrafforti dell'arcata della navata centrale. Nel ricco stile perpendicolare, i fragili divisori ad intaglio si estendono lungo le aperture nella parete della navata centrale, racchiudendo anche lo spazio della cappella commemorativa.
