The east end of most cathedrals is square, although some are polygonal or semicircular (know as an apse). A few have a ring of chapels around an apse and this arrangement, know by the French word chevet, may be seen at Canterbury, Gloucester and Norwich. More often, however, there is a large chapel extending eastwards from the main east end of the cathedral, and this is usually called the Lady Chapel because it is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The various small chapels situated around the chevet, or elsewhere, are often called chantry chapels because masses were sung in them for the soul of the person who originally built and endowed the chapel at his own expense. Each chapel contained a small altar. |
| La parte a est della maggioranza delle cattedrali è squadrata, benché alcuni siano poligonali semicircolari (conosciuta come abside). Alcune hanno un giro di cappelle attorno all'abside e questa sistemazione, conosciuta dalla parola francese chevet può essere visto a Canterbury , Gloucester o Norwich. Inoltre tuttavia c'è una grande cappella che si estende a destra dell'entrata est della cattedrale e questa è di solito chiamata Lady Chapel perché è dedicata alla Beata Vergine Maria. Le varie piccole cappelle situate attorno a chevet o altrove , sono spesso chiamate Chantry Chapels (cappelle per la commemorazione) perchè qui venivano cantate messe per l'anima della persona che le aveva originariamente costruite o donate alla cappella a sue spese. Ogni cappella ha un piccolo altare. |
