| The eastern arm or choir is usually shorter than the western one, and is sometimes called the presbytery (from the Latin word presbytery, meaning priest ), or the chancel (because in the earliest Christian churches, as today, this part was divided from the nave by a low open screen (from the Latin word cancellus , a screen).The high altar is placed at the east end and the main entrance at the west end. |

Il braccio orientale o coro è di solito più corto di quello occidentale ed è chiamato a volte il presbiterio ( dalla parola latina presbiter che significa prete), o il cancello perché nelle prime chiese cristiane, come oggi, questa parte è divisa dalla navata da un basso cancello aperto ( dalla parola latina cancellus). L'altare maggiore è posto a est, mentre l'entrata principale è a ovest. |
