England Southwell is the least known, the most unexpected. Approach the
west front: Southwell is not only unexpected, it is also unusual.The
lead spires, the "Rhenish caps" , are unique in England, and
give this austere west front the character of a church in the Rhineland.The
Perpendicular west window is, of
course, a 15th century insertion, but otherwise this west
front is the finest surviving Norman
west front in England, and dates from c. 1140. |
