Another characteristic of Gothic Cathedrals were the Gargoyles.A Gargoyle is a grotesque carved human or animal figure found on an architectural structure, originally designed to serve as a spout to throw rainwater clear of a bulding. They later became strictly ornamental and assumed many forms.As the cathedral was to be a "sermon in stone", which could be read by an illiterate population, some gargoyles illustrate Bible stories. Others were simply grotesque. One reason for this is the belief that frightening figures could scare evil spirits, so they were put on the outsides of buildings to do just that.
	Un'altra caratteristica delle Cattedrali Gotiche sono i gargoyle. Un gargoyle è una figura umana o animale grottesca che si trova su una struttura architettonica, originariamente disegnata per servire come grondaia per gettare l'acqua piovana fuori dall'edificio. Successivamente divennero puramente ornamentali e assunsero molte forme.Poiché una cattedrale doveva essere una "preghiera di pietra" che potesse essere letta da una popolazione analfabeta, alcuni gargoyle illustrano storie della Bibbia. Altri sono semplicemente grotteschi. Un motivo può essere la credenza che figure spaventose potessero terrorizzare gli spiriti maligni, così essi erano messi fuori degli edifici per questo scopo.
