| The fan vault is a
major development in Perpendicular
vaulting. Replacing the traditional Gothic interlace of pointed arches,
flaring conoids now meet over the centre of the space. The delicate fan
vault at Gloucester express the fragile patterning and stretched
surfaces of the Perpendicular style.The ribs are no longer structural.
They are simply carved on the surfaces of thin stone plates which are
fitted together to form the conoids or fans. La volta a ventagli è una delle maggiori novità delle volte Perpendicolari. Sostituendo il tradizionale intreccio di archi appuntiti del Gotico, conoidi allargati ora si incontrano sopra al centro dello spazio.
