| The present Cathedral stands on the site of the Anglo-Saxon church of St.Werburgh, where Hugh d'Avranches, aided by Bishop Anselm, founded a great Benedictine Abbey in 1092. The Abbey flourished as a centre of monastic life, attracting many pilgrims, until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1540. Although the cathedral is still essentially medieval, most of the original building has been replaced over the centuries . The oldest parts of the Cathedral, dating from the 12th century, are to be found in the north transept and in the cloisters. |

L'attuale cattedrale si trova sul sito della chiesa anglosassone di St. Werburgh, dove Hugh d'Avranches, aiutato dal vescovo Anselmo, fondò una grande abbazia Benedettina nel 1092. L'abbazia fiorì come centro di vita monastica, attraendo molti pellegrini, fino alla Dissoluzione dei Monasteri nel 1540. Benchè la cattedrale sia tuttora essenzialmente medievale, la maggioranza dell’edificio originale è stata rimaneggiata nel corso dei secoli. Le parti più vecchie della cattedrale, che risalgono al XII secolo, sono il transetto nord e il chiostro. |
