A bishop's dream led to the building of the Abbey as it stands today. Bishop Oliver King, had a dream in which he saw angels going up and down ladders reaching to heaven. Bishop King interpreted this as a sign he should rebuild the Abbey. Two master masons, Robert and William Vertue, promised him the "finest vault in England", and the Abbey's fan vaulting is its most impressive feature.The Abbey is regarded as an outstanding example of Perpendicular English Gothic architecture, and is one of the last great churches built in this style. |
| Il sogno di un vescovo portò alla costruzione dell'abbazia come è oggi. Il vescovo Oliver King fece un sogno nel quale vide degli angeli che andavano su e giù per delle scale che raggiungevano il Paradiso. Il vescovo King interpretò il sogno come un segno che lui dovesse ricostruire l'abbazia. Due maestri muratori, Robert e William Vertue, gli promisero "la più bella volta che c'era in Inghilterra", la volta a ventagli dall'abbazia è il suo aspetto più interessante. L'abbazia è considerata come un eccellente esempio dell'architettura del Gotico Perpendicolare inglese, ed è una delle ultime grandi chiese costruite in questo stile. |
