| St. George's Chapel dominates the lower ward of Windsor Castel and for 500 years has been the home of the College of St. George and of the Order of the Garter.In 1240 Henry III ordered a chapel to be built in the lower ward, close to his new apartment. It was dedicated to St. Edward the Confessor and stood on the site of the present Albert Memorial Chapel.Early in 1348 Edward III , inaugurated the Most Noble Order of the Garter as 'a society, fellowship and college of knights'. |

| These where 26 including the sovereign and the famous blue garter was to be " a symbol of amity ".Edward III thus linked to himself 'in the bonds of Amity and Peace' such great soldiers as the Black Prince, the Earl of Warwick and the Earl of Salisbury . The Order symbolised the new ideals of chivalry and it also helped to diminish the dangers of political disaffection.Within seven months of inaugurating the Order, Edward III on 6th August 1348 refounded Henry III's Chapel in honour of the Virgin Mary, St. George and St. Edward and established within it a body of clergy. | |

La Cappella di San Giorgio domina la guardia inferiore del castello di Windsor e per 500 anni è stata la sede del collegio di St. George e dell'Ordine della Giarrettiera . Nel 1240, Henry III ordinò che la cappella fosse costruita nella guardia inferiore, di fianco al suo appartamento. Fu dedicata a St. Edward il Confessore e sorgeva nel luogo della attuale Albert Memorial Chapel . All'inizio del 1348 Edoardo III inaugurò il Nobilissimo Ordine della Giarrettiera come "una società, comunità e collegio dei cavalieri". Questi erano 26, compreso il sovrano, e la famosa giarrettiera blu doveva essere "un simbolo di amicizia". Edoardo III così legò a sé nei "legami di Amicizia e Pace" grandi combattenti come il Principe Nero, il Duca di Warwick e il Duca di Salisbury. L'ordine rappresentava i nuovi ideali cavallereschi e aiutò a diminuire i pericoli di disaffezione politica. Entro 7 mesi dall'inaugurazione dell'Ordine, Edoardo III, il 6 agosto 1348, rifondò la cappella di Enrico III in onore della Vergine Maria, di San Giorgio e di San Edoardo e vi insediò un gruppo di religiosi |
