Another typical feature of English cathedrals, the entrance porch is a small boxy structure tacked onto one of the side aisles of the nave. It provides a sheltered entrance with a comfortable vaulted space. Often the porch is used as an entrance in preference to the relatively small an plain west portal. With its simple pointed arcating above the doorway, this porch at Wells is a good example of the austere quality of the Early English style.
