| Wells is the first major English cathedral built entirely in the Gothic style. The facade stretches out laterally like a glorious decorative screen. Originally its niches and buttresses held richly painted and gilded stone figures. The towers are placed beyond the sides of the church, emphasising the horizontal extensions of the facade. The entrance is a single inconspicuous doorway. The interior of Wells with its horizontal continuity epitomises the Early English style. Arcades move down the nave like the superimposed arcades of a Roman aqueduct. This makes the nave appear much longer that it actually is. Added later were the dramatic springer arches spanning the nave in the distance. |

Wells è la prima grande cattedrale inglese, interamente costituita in stile Gotico. La facciata si allarga lateralmente in fuori come una splendida cortina decorativa.
