| Gothic Art and Architecture, religious and secular buildings, sculpture, stained glass, and illuminated manuscripts and other decorative arts produced in Europe during the latter part of the Middle Ages (5th century to 15th century). Architecture was the dominant expression of the Gothic Age. Emerging in the first half of the 12th century from Romanesque antecedent, Gothic architecture continued well into the 16th century in northern Europe. Although a vast number of secular monuments were built in the Gothic style, it was in the service of the church, the most prolific builder of the Middle Ages, that the new architecture attained its fullest realization. | |

Arte e Architettura Gotica, costruzioni religiose e secolari, sculture, vetri a piombo e manoscritti decorati e altre decorazioni artistiche prodotte in Europa durante l’ultima parte del Medioevo (dal 5° sec. al 15° sec.). L’architettura fu l’espressione dominante dell’età gotica. Emersa nella 1° metà del 12° sec dalla precedente romanica, l’architettura gotica si impose fino al 16° sec. nel nord Europa. Sebbene un vasto numero di monumenti secolari fossero costruiti in stile gotico, fu al servizio della chiesa, il più prolifico costruttore del Medioevo, che la nuova architettura raggiunse la sua piena realizzazione. |
