Three miles (5 km) west of Liscannor are the Cliffs of Mother, on one of the
outstanding features of the country. Rising sheer above the sea to the nearly 700 feet and extending about 5 miles (8 km) along the coast, they provide magnificent views especially from OBriens Tower at the northern end (where the cliffs reach their maximum height of 668 feet), and from Hags Head (400 feet) at the southern end. OBriens Tower, a circular structure, was erected in 1835 by Cornelius OBrien. On a clear day the Aran Islands are visible from the cliffs. |
